The City of Chicago makes available the high level of every police report in their database, from 2001 to today (July 2024), a 23.5 year period.
There are numerous conclusions we can see from this data. Let's dig in.
In 2001, there were 485,916 police reports filed. In 2023, that number is down to 241,810, a decrease of over 50%.
The largest declines in the major categories from 2001 to 2023 are in Narcotics (89% decrease), Burglary (73% decrease), Battery (52% decrease), and Criminal Damage (51% decrease).
If we zoom in from 2000 to today, we see an increase in filed reports against these kinds of crimes.
Filings for Motor Vehicle Theft are up 115%, Theft up 32%, and Criminal Damage up 10%.
Arrests are down 77% since 2000.
